Wind Loss Mitigation Insurance Discounts

What is it?

On January 1, 2008, South Carolina enacted a law that requires insurance companies to notify you of the availability of insurance premium discounts based on the construction of your home. Preventative measures such as hurricane strapping on the roof and shutters qualify for a discount on your homeowners insurance.

How Do I Get It?

Because every home is unique, a visual inspection must be conducted. Even identical models by the same builder have differences depending on the year they were built and the sub-contractors used. The inspection focuses on the following aspects of your home:  Roof Covering, Roof Attachment, Roof to Wall Connection, Roof Shape and Pitch, Secondary Water Resistance, and Opening Protection. Most insurance companies require a licensed builder or home inspector verify those aspects of the home.

Does It Work?

YES. We have conducted hundreds of inspections since 2009, and our homeowners have been getting results.  Homeowners have been reporting discounts up to $300 off of their current premium. Since every insurance company is different, the exact discount amount can vary.

What Should I Do First?

Call your insurance company and ask them the following questions:

  1. Am I already receiving a wind loss mitigation discount? If you have purchased your home recently, or have renewed or changed your policy recently, you may already be receiving a discount.
  2. What discounts are available?  The insurance company should be able to give you a numerical or percentage estimate of how much you’ll save.

  3. Is there a specific form that should be used?

Many companies require that their company form be used. If so, have them send a copy to you immediately. Some insurance companies do not have a form, in which case we will complete a standard South Carolina form.

How Soon Will My Discount Take Effect?

When you call for an inspection, we can usually be there within a few days. The inspection only takes about 30 minutes, after which we will leave a copy of the form with you. Once you submit the form to your insurance company, it will be processed and your discount will take effect. In some cases, a notary signature is required. If so, we will have the form notarized and delivered back to you within a day.
